I Run... Therefore I am.

As you know, we embrace all ability levels with Stroller Warriors. In fact, I think we even get most excited about the members that have never ran a day in their life, but want to start their journey with us. As far as I’m concerned, the day they show up to a workout and do run/walk intervals, they are a RUNNER!

But for some reason, that term “runner” is frequently deemed something that must be earned. What are the qualifications? Do you have to run a certain pace? Do you have to run a certain mileage? Do you have to run for several years?  Do you have to run the entire way? Do you have to run a half marathon? Maybe the real runners are only the marathoners?

I don’t recall ever seeing a list of requirements somewhere to call yourself a runner. If you run, even if it’s 1 block, doesn’t that mean you are a runner?

You may be surprised to hear that long distance running never came naturally to me. In high school, I woke up nervous and dreaded the cross country workouts. We typically ran 1 or 2 miles and I thought it might as well be 100. But, I made myself do it, because it was beneficial for basketball and track & field (my "real" sports) and I enjoyed the camaraderie of my team mates. Regardless of our team’s success, it was still a mental struggle for me and I never really felt like I was a distance runner. I saw myself as a jumper, a sprinter, a hurdler, a basketball player. Distance runner? NOPE. I didn’t feel great doing it, nor was I the winner at our meets, so that surely meant I didn’t rate that title.

The funny thing is, the title of this blog, "I run... therefore I am," was on the back of one of our team track shirts.  I should have paid closer attention to the message that our outstanding coaches Nancy Collins, Deb McCarthy, and Frank Nelson were trying to convey to us.  They valued every runner on the team, no matter their ability, no matter their event.  When I reflect back today, so much of how Stroller Warriors operates is because of how they led our team.

Here's an entertaining throwback photo for you, dating back to 1998! This was was one of my senior year XC meets. I was always chasing my speedy counterpart and dear friend Steph (Collins) Harder.
Years passed and I took up road races as a hobby following college. I set a goal to run a half marathon and followed a training plan carefully to get to race day. At that point, I finally considered myself a distance runner. But why did it take me completing a half marathon to feel like I earned that title?! IT SHOULDN’T HAVE.

Everyone has different talents. Perhaps running is not your first and most natural talent.  Perhaps it's still a new sport to you and you are still learning.  Or maybe you feel awful during most of your runs and assume only the "real" runners feel good.  (Trust me, it hurts for everyone at some point!)  No matter what you believe running is or what it should feel like, if you are out there trying, whether that's running 1 mile a couple times a week, training for a 5K, aiming for a 10K, or maybe even an ultra, you have more than earned your title as a RUNNER.
Picture
Our weekend early morning crew at Camp Lejeune, NC. All distances, all paces... all RUNNERS.
I’ve heard people discuss their long runs while training and comment on how someday, they want to be like that… a real runner. My response… you already are! Don’t sell yourself short. Training for shorter distances is less time consuming, but is still challenging.  We all have a distance that works for us. And we all have our own pace.  Every distance, at every pace, is a great accomplishment.  It seems to be a natural succession to aim for the longer distances after meeting a goal, which is great!  But there are also alternative ways to improve that should not be overlooked or undervalued.  You can take on more advanced training plans and focus on increasing your speed and endurance for those shorter distances.  Or perhaps take on a new type of race, like a duathlon, aquathon, triathlon, or Tough Mudder to incorporate running with other activities.  All these different goals keep us moving forward and that's all that really matters.

There is no such thing as a real runner.  I run… therefore I am. And that goes for you too, RUNNER.

HAPPY RUNNING,
Steph

Today, we’d like turn the spotlight on one of our members, Katie. We’ll let Katie tell her moving story in her own words.

In September of 2016, I was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer.  It was the ultimate low in my life.  My daughter was two and my son was just six months old when I was diagnosed.  I was very out of shape.  I figured something had to give.  So after my four week post operation appointment, still with a healing incision, I decided to show up to my first workout with Stroller Warriors® Parris Island.  I was nearly 100 pounds overweight. I have a permanently paralyzed vocal cord, which makes breathing in the humidity very difficult *if you've ever been to Beaufort, SC you know it's humid 99.9% of the time! Ha.*  So why not join a run club right?!  To this day it is the best decision I've made in my time here in Beaufort.

First run with Stroller Warriors® Parris Island - October 2016
We went around the circle for new member intros, in my still whispery voice I introduced myself, showed my neck wound and said I'd do what I could, but I didn’t know how much that would be.  Both of my kids were with me in a double stroller and we set out.  I couldn't run more than 90 seconds at a time, and even that was a struggle.  Dayle, one of the PI members stayed with me.  She pushed me to go further. She didn’t let me give up.  I will never forget that.  I joined the Couch to 5K group which was more than halfway done. I was able to graduate with them just a few months post total thyroidectomy. And I never looked back.  I bridged to 10K then ran my first half marathon.  There were many setbacks along the way, but I knew I always had a tribe of great women behind me, supporting me every step of the way.

The original group of Stroller Warriors® that I began running with - May 2017
My success within Stroller Warriors® is about so much more than running. It has always been about community for me.  I was a stranger to these women, when I showed up to a workout and told them I had cancer.  Never once did they bat an eye.  They were, and still are, my tribe.  After graduating from Couch to 5K I had to take a break from running and do Radioactive Iodine Therapy.  It came with a week of isolation away from my small children and husband.  The group rallied behind me. They fed my family dinner every night, offered to watch my kids, dropped off snacks when the kids were running low, brought me all kinds of amazing comfort gifts when I got home, and stuck with me every step of the way!

Then, two months after my treatment, my husband left for his fourth tour overseas.  I was not ready, but they never left me.  They pulled me through the hard days.  We ran, worked out, ate and laughed.  Members took turns pushing my double stroller during runs so I could just focus on one foot in front of the other.  It was a testament to what this group truly is.

A little comparison... but a reminder that in both of those bodies I am a runner! May 2018
Once I was back on my feet, full force, I joined the leadership team.  I assisted on Couch to 5K; picking up C25K workouts whenever they needed.  Watching those women accomplish their goal was so satisfying.  Then, I took over Welcoming Committee duties for our chapter.  I still have people stop me out in town and ask me how they know me.  Most of the time it's because of the Stroller Warriors page.  As we transitioned to new Coordinators I started helping the club in any way I could.  I have hosted a handful of Mini Warrior Events, including pumpkin painting, park dates and most recently a firehouse visit!  During our transition I have also jumped in to lead workouts.  For the most part my workouts are strength.  It has been really fun to dust the cobwebs off my Exercise Science degree from college and push the Warriors to do something that isn't normally in their comfort zone!  I have done a little bit of everything in my time here in hopes of giving back to a club that has done so much for me.
Picture
My medal holder, that my husband made for me, with all of my race medals!
Cancer gave me a perspective that I wish I could share with others.  Not to take yourself so seriously.  To always been kinder than you feel. That your best is ALWAYS good enough.  For me, this club has been about so much more than the miles *even though I ran 500+ of them last year.* It has been about the family.  The love. The support. Taking back my health.  Feeling strong and confident in my body when I felt like it was failing me.  I hope I am leaving this chapter better than I found it.  I hope I have given more than I have taken. Our next adventure will take us to Camp Pendleton, but Stroller Warriors® Parris Island will always hold a very special place in my heart. My hope is anyone who needs a tribe will look to Stroller Warriors.  That everyone who reads my story will see the heart and soul of this club.

Katie, thank you so much for sharing your story with us! We wish you continued health and happiness and an easy PCS!

Running inspiration comes in all shapes and sizes and we'd love to share with you an inspirational Mini Warrior who has been running his entire life!

Meet Jackson, who, at only four and a half years old, has run 36 races in 5 states!
(8 states if you include the races he ran while in the womb)

Picture
Picture
Jackson's mom, Cassie, joined SW Yorktown when she moved to Virginia in August 2013 (she was 7 months pregnant with him) and they have been running with Stroller Warriors ever since. While Jackson did participate in a kid's marathon with that chapter, it wasn’t until he moved to California and became part of SW Team Elsewhere that he began participating in the Mini Miles Program and hasn't slowed down yet!
Jackson helped his mom run many races during the 9 months before he was born and only a few hours after he was born, his parents began signing him up for all different kid races. The first race he “ran” was the Monster Mile (October 2013).  He was only 3 weeks old, so of course his mom pushed him in the stroller. While he “ran” a handful of kid’s races during his stroller times, the first race he actually ran was the Crawlin’ Crab Kid’s Kilometer in October 2014  (the day after his first birthday).
Picture
First race on my own two feet.... Crawlin’ Crab Kid’s Kilometer in October 2014
Since his first birthday, this amazing Mini Warrior has continued to have fun racing and has earned a variety of medals.  If his parents find a race to run, they always check to see if it has a kid's race, and if it does, they sign him up too... making it a family affair!

He has run in Virginia, Maryland, California, Illinois, and Hawaii and while in the womb: Nevada, California, Washington, Virginia and Washington D.C.  In 2018, he has slowed down a bit with how many races he has run; between the rainy season going extra long this year and getting ready to PCS overseas, he, like the rest of us during PCS season, hasn't had as much time to run races.

Picture
When asked if one race stands out as his favorite/most memorable, he said "The dinosaur run because I am obsessed with dinosaurs!"  He got to see a lot of dinosaurs on the race course.

Although Jackson hasn't created any "night before" or "race day" traditions or routines just yet, he does usually eat half of a pop-tart before he runs.  YUM!

His best running advice for other Mini Warriors.... As Jackson runs in place, he says, "train..... I can train you to be super fast. That’s why my parents are fast.”

When Jackson isn't running races, he enjoys reading, swimming, ninja warrior training, and anything and everything to do with dinosaurs and trains!  Keep up the great work Jackson. We hope you find some unique and exciting races to run while living overseas!

Picture
Thank you to Cassie and Marc, Jackson's mom and dad, who are his inspiration, for letting us highlight your son's accomplishments.  Way to be an amazing example for him!

Member Spotlight: Meet Gaby

Globally, Stroller Warriors Running Club has countless members, who set and achieve a variety of challenging running goals, each and every year!

Meet Gaby, a member of Stroller Warriors Okinawa, who, like many of our amazing members, learned of our Couch to Crazy (C2C) Program at a workout and in time… decided to go for it!  Her success story will inspire you to ask yourself... why not me?!

New members, like Gaby, often watch their fellow warriors who are training for longer distances and begin to think to themselves… "Maybe I could do it too?!" It is THEN, that the power of Stroller Warriors encouragement, support and a can-do attitude kicks in!  Runners of all running backgrounds realize that they actually can and soon will achieve their big, huge crazy awesome goal(s)!

PictureCouch to 5K Graduation Race!
Gaby’s C2C journey began in early 2015 when she joined a SW Okinawa Couch to 5K (C25K) group and before she knew it, it was graduation race day!  Her husband, Genaro, ran with her, pushing their daughter, Liliana, making it a family affair!  She continued to run 5K races for the next year and even ran a Mommy Daughter Dash (1 Miler) with her daughter before she began to train to achieve the 10K distance.  Just three months after her 10K Graduation Race, she completed the Ayahashi Half Marathon race with many of her fellow Stroller Warriors!  Couch to Crazy – CHECK!

Ayahashi Half Marathon! C2C... CHECK!
But her story doesn’t end there….
It was her mom that had given her the initial push to start running and in time her mom began encouraging her to push farther than her original C2C goal… to go for the challenge of the marathon distance!  Gaby had hoped to continue with the SW Okinawa half marathon training group to train for and run the Naha Marathon, unfortunately, she wasn’t chosen for the lottery so she would have to wait.  More waiting would come in the form of a pneumonia diagnosis; which took many months to recover from, but the marathon goal was still on her mind.  It was the encouragement and convincing of another member, Sarah, that helped her to decide to start training again… this time for the marathon distance.  On marathon race day, it was her husband’s support, popping up in random places throughout the course, and the support and encouragement of fellow warriors from the start line to the finish line, that made it an unforgettable experience!
Picture
Gaby finishing the 2018 Okinawa Marathon!
In just three years’ time, Gaby not only said mission accomplished to Couch to Crazy, but she went on to successfully achieve her goal of completing a FULL marathon race in February 2018, the Okinawa City Marathon!  All of the races she has run have each been special in their own way, but crossing the finish line of the marathon and seeing how far she had come was the “best feeling ever!” She added… “I'm not going to lie, it wasn't easy, but it can be done if you want it and believe in yourself.” So much truth there!
Picture
3 YEARS of determination & hard work! Congratulations Gaby!
When Gaby isn’t running, being mom and wife, she enjoys reading, knitting, sewing and making bows. Her best piece of advice for a new runner? “Be patient, set a goal and find the right shoes.”

Thank you, Gaby, for allowing us to spotlight your Couch to Crazy + Marathon journey!  Congratulations Gaby!!  We are so proud of your determination; you are an inspiration to us all!!

Have YOU considered going “Couch to Crazy” with your fellow Stroller Warriors? We assure you that the sense of accomplishment and the countless memories it will bring are truly priceless… C25K truly IS just the beginning!

To learn more about the Stroller Warriors Couch to Crazy Program (training for and running a 5K race, then a 10K race, and finally a half marathon race, in that order, within a 12 month period) contact your chapter's coordinator!

Stroller Warriors Running Club has offered a mileage incentive program for years. The goal of the program is help others set and reach mileage goals in a one-year timeframe. Over the years we’ve had lots of amazing participants in our mileage incentive programs, but this past year, we had two participants who might just be our most amazing Run The World participants yet!

Let me introduce to you two members of Stroller Warriors Miramar, Felix and Ayla! What makes these two runners stand out among the rest isn’t just the fact that they ran 250 miles in a year or that they ran their first half marathon while Running The World. Both of these amazing runners are just 10 years-old!

PictureFelix and Ayla during the San Diego Half Marathon
So how did the idea to participate in Run the World come about? 10 year-old Felix says he heard his mother talking about the Run The World program and decided to make it a goal of his too.  While 10, almost 11 year-old Ayla says she didn’t know she was going to Run the World, she was, “just running for fun and my Mom kept track of my miles.”

Felix and Ayala both say that the best part of running 250 miles has been running with each other.  We’re so impressed with Felix and Ayla and their parents who have motivated and encouraged them to reach their goals.

We’ll leave you with these wise words from our youngest 2016 RTW participants:

Picture
From Ayla:

What have you learned along the way?
To stretch after running, it's better to run with friends and talk about books while running and when you run a race, drinks lots of water.

What has been your favorite part of running 250 miles?
Running with my friend Felix.

What has been the hardest part of running 250 miles?
Being tired and not feeling like running, but once you're done running you feel good about it and you're not tired anymore.

Who inspires you?
My Dad when he says "Don't be weak!"

Is there anything else you'd like to tell us?
When you're done running, eat ice cream!

Picture
From Felix:
What have you learned along the way?
How to run properly and how hard and fast I can push myself. I got my fastest mile while doing a running streak in November.

What has been your favorite part of running 250 miles?
Running while talking with my friends and other Stroller Warriors.

What has been the hardest part of running 250 miles? Trying to catch up at the end of the year since we took time off when mom had a baby.

Who inspires you?
Stroller Warriors and my Mom

Is there anything else you want to tell us?
Other kids should try and run the world because it’s not that hard.
